In 2004, Brandenburg’s state government began realigning its development policy both by region and by sector and refocused it accordingly. In November 2005, using the motto “Stärken stärken“ (Strengthening strengths), the government identified regional growth areas and corresponding industry fields of competence that had been subject to dynamic growth over the previous few years and had growth potential for the future.
The aim of regional growth areas is to strengthen forces for growth, secure employment and ensure more efficient use of funding due to concentration on these locations. Regional growth areas are intended to act as motors for the region and radiate their success to the surrounding area.
Frankfurt (Oder) and Eisenhüttenstadt together form the economic centre of East Brandenburg and, as a metropolis for the region/district, play an important role for the surrounding area and the region as a whole.
Their immediate vicinity to the Polish border, outstanding traffic connections and highly-developed infrastructure are particular hallmarks of the growth area and have shaped their economic development, leading companies to locate to the area and resulting in the creation of jobs for the region.
